We’re Not Broken, Just Bent
Cherry blossoms fell from their branches as the cool wind carried them from the ground. She looked up to capture the petals into her hands, captivated by the simplicity of its beauty. The air swept passed her, leaving a misty feeling on her skin. Her eyes closed while memories began to roll through her mind like a film strip.
He was handsome and kind. Full of love and devotion. Both innocent and unaware of their future. The taste of young romance was bittersweet. He knew how to put a smile on her lips with just a touch of his kiss, and a tear in her eyes with a white lie. It was an emotional rollercoaster full of happiness and pain that lead them into an unexpected ending.
Weeks later, she visited the same spot, doing the same thing as petals fell down her shoulders. She wanted to have that feeling of innocent, young love again. And walking down that brick pathway was the only way to revisit that time. She closed her eyes once again, hoping that she could see those images once more.
“Hi.”
She opened her eyes to the voice and found his familiar face staring at her. He looked older. He had a little stubble on his chin and some wrinkles around his mouth. But his eyes glistened just like when he was younger.
“Hi,” she whispered.
“I see you come here often,” he stated.
“How do you know?”
“Cause I do too,” he admitted, sending her a small smile. “I’d walk home from work and I’d find myself here. I don’t know how or why, but I just do. I reminisce about the past, and the what ifs. The good and the bad. I guess I missed that time. And somehow this is where I find it,” he answered. She scanned his features carefully as the beat of her heart began to race. “Then I noticed you. You were doing the same thing every week. And I guess, maybe that was the reason I kept visiting. Because you were here.”
